This review is remarkably fitting seeing as Sunday’s video was all about the Best Beauty & Fashion Reads. The book in question is one of the hottest book releases in the fashion world from 2012: ‘It’.
At first, it’s easy to assume that ‘It’ is a detailed autobiography of the life that It girl and ex-TV presenter and model Alexa Chung has lived so far; considering Alexa has done a few major book signings and there’s been a huge amount of campaigning behind this book, that’s an easy mistake to make. However, instead of being filled to the brim with anecdotes and funny stories that us average people can only dream of being able to tell, the book is in fact filled to the brim with rather random photographs that only vaguely support what Alexa is trying to say. Some of these pictures are hand drawn illustrations, some are rather inappropriate and don’t even seem to fit the book and what Alexa is trying to say, and others seem to be photos that only mean something to Alexa herself.
Even though the pictures are generally pointless, Alexa’s story (though short) is very interesting to read and the short-but-sweet way of telling it seems to mimic Alexa’s rather laid back and secretive attitude. Most of the stories are in fact anecdotes and tales about interesting predicaments that she’s been in, but there are a few that seem to give you a bit of a life lesson and reassure you a little bit.
The book only took me about an hour to sit down and comfortably read through and gaze at some of the pictures which is a shame considering the book will set you back around £12. The stories are rather funny and somewhat insightful, but it really does feel like you’re paying to look at Alexa’s private photo albums as opposed to reading her autobiography about her life so far.
If you’re looking for an in-depth novel that will give you a detailed background of what it’s like to be an It girl then this book really isn’t for you. If you are, however, in the market for a book that’s extremely easy to read, pretty funny and will look wonderful on your shelf, Alexa Chung’s ‘It’ will be the perfect book for you.
